A 1740 copy of Corpus Juris Civilis complete in two massive volumes fully bound in white Vellum. This pair of tomes was published by Sumptibus Johannis Friderici Gleditschii, Leipzig, and is quite massive and has a huge shelf or desk presence. Beautifully printing. Some damages as you would expect from large scale books of this period. Noted ink bleed throughout this book and all examples of it causing tanning in much of the text block. Cracking at the spines, though they are fully stable and readable. Paper is awesome, lambskin soft and malleable not brittle. One has a large chip at the top of the spine which has revealed that it has been bound with a sheet of music-- perhaps the lost work of a German composer? :) Great gift for a power attorney. Language is Latin.

These books are important as they formed the basis of all Roman law and informed Norman law (thus common law) eventually to some extent. Nice provenance in the form of the original bookseller's catalogue showing this book imported to the United States in the mid 1930's through New York City from The Hague. An American literature quiz tucked in from 1936 possibly from an Ivy league school. Not much in the way of writing or bookstamps. A few pencil notes.

The title page reads as follows:
