19th Century Edo Japanese Kagami Silvered Bronze Hand Mirror

This is an absolutely gorgeous Japanese Edo period (probably mid 19th century) Japanese Bronze Kagami Mirror in a Fitted Lacquered Box. A large bronze mirror with a graceful relief design on verso depicting Ume (Japanese Apricot), Hinagiku (Daisy), and Botan (peony), alongside a vertical row of Japanese characters in the center which state "Tenkaichi Fujiwara Yoshitsugu" or "The best thing on earth, Mr. Yoshitsugu Fujiwara". Upon the mirror, remnants of silvering, and with a plain handle. The mirror is encased in a spectacular fitted lacquered box. Overall with the case the mirror measures . 12.25"L x 8"W.

Condition is outstanding with a rich and deep original patina and a few spots of verdigris. No dents, dings, or significant scratches. The original box is very rare for a kagami owing to the exceedingly fragile nature of Japanese lacquerware. This one is black and gold with a plain black interior and bverse. The box has some chips and inpainting where prior repairs have been made.
