1932 Six Sterling Silver English Cochlearia Spoons William Suckling Ltd. Boxed

Sorry, this item has sold.

Six 4 1/8" Sterling silver cochlearia by William Suckling Ltd. of Birmingham in 1932, England. These are fascinating and probably designed to mimic the design of ancient silver Roman cochlearia that were unearthed in the Hoxne and Thetford hoard. While it is not fully known, it is believed that the unusual spoons were used to eat the prized Burgundy snails or cockles favored by Romans where the spike at the end of the handle pulled the morsels from their shells. Total combined weight precisely 50.0 grams. Hallmarks are stamped clearly on the obverse of the bowls. There is also a tiny sterling hallmark on the handles / spikes. You could use these for your martini (or other cocktails) or quite nicely for escargot. They hold the olives or other small garnish perfectly and rest on the rim of the glass handsomely.

The box is original and curiously lists an Argentinian retailer of Black Ltd, Sarmiento 731, Buenos Aires. The box latch is quite fussy and probably needs an adjustment.

A fascinating item that will likely never be available at market again.
