Offered is an antique 14K gold seal fob with intaglio carved carnelian. The 19th century seal features a center shield quartered with matched fields at the diagonals. One image is 3 stacked axes and the other is of a winged griffin rampant. The motto beneath the shield is emblazoned with the phrase, "audax et fidelis" (bold and faithful). At the top, out of a mural coronet is a griffin rampant. The intaglio is of a lucid quality and is unworn with no chips or significant scratches.
The gold in which the stone is set is of the finest craftsmanship. Overall, this is quartered and marked by fleur de lis motifs. The gold is incredibly detailed and shows some wear to the finest lines. The bail is substantially worn as if this seal had swung on a chain for many years. When I first recovered the seal, I located a cocoon inside the gold bell indicating that it sat fallow for a very long period. Two links of chain or jump rings are fixed to the bail. The gold does not appear to be stamped for the maker and was acid tested. Current condition is gleaming.
Dimensions: 18.5mm x 23.25mm x 29mm. Stone is 18mm x 23mm.
